Chile is experiencing a rapid demographic aging process resulting from sustained advances in healthcare. Life expectancy has increased from 53 years in 1950 to over 81 in 2025.
The world’s population is aging. Older adults (people aged 60 and over) currently make up 1 billion of the population, and this number is estimated to reach 2.1 billion by 2050.
In the last two decades, Latin America and the Caribbean have reduced their traditional role as a region of origin for migrants, going from a net emigration rate of 2 people per 1,000 inhabitants in 2000 to only 0.5 in 2022, mainly due to an increase in intraregional immigration.
